late July 2008 - Mission impossible: cleaning 460 GLE
This poor car. Talk about car abuse: by right I should be reported to the 460 Welfare people. My 460 has languished for a few years at the gable end of the house, not being started half as often as it should. Cleaning it was quite a challenge: it was covered in green gunk which required 3 thorough washes to remove. Eventually I got to putting ‘Prestone’ wax on, and the results were well worth the effort. I really like this Prestone stuff ( American ) ... it’s a name more synonymous with Brake fluid, but their wax sure does the job!

Oops!
The 460 GLE is such a beautiful car, but it’s not without fault. I knew that some work had been done on the rear quarter panel, but thought that it was just a case of a metal plate being welded in. Not so. Having tried to cure some minor rust on the wheelarch there, I discovered that I was scraping into a thick coat of bodyfiller. A peep inside the boot revealed a mess of black mastic ( circled ). The car obviously got ‘swiped’ and a new wing was grafted on - badly. I am undecided as to what I am going to do. The structure is fine, but this needs to be dealt with. I may have a new quarter panel put on if I can.
